Conductive additive for glass fiber filled PPS compounds with maintained mechanical properties and required processability

TUBALL™ graphene nanotubes in the form of TUBALL™ MATRIX 821 beta and TUBALL™ MATRIX 808 are a versatile conductive additive that has been specifically designed to provide superior electrical conductivity to thermoplastic materials, while retaining mechanical properties and providing acceptable injectability to 30–50 wt.% glass fiber filled PPS compounds.

The traditional agents added into thermoplastics have numerous drawbacks, increasing the number of out-of-spec parts and forcing producers to make compromises in performance: carbon black can’t provide stable and homogeneous electrical conductivity, while carbon fiber can’t provide targeted low resistivity.

In contrast to conventional additives, graphene nanotubes used at low loading rates—starting from
0.1 wt.% in the total compound—make it possible to preserve the outstanding chemical and thermal performance of high glass filled PPS, including its dimensional stability at ambient conditions. They also preserve the required MFI level and impact viscosity, thereby providing acceptable injectability, which is hard to achieve using multi wall carbon nanotubes.

The conductive GF-filled PPS compounds are used for manufacturing various construction and automotive parts, including highly electrically conductive caps for electric vehicle battery cells.
